EMERGING job roles vs DEClining professions
Black Americans are concentrated in low to average paying occupations with starting salaries below the middle-class threshold. Although not the largest sector for Black employment, the service industry has been hardest hit during the Covid-19 pandemic. The top five employment occupations (Highest Representation) for black workers are:
Postal Mail Sorters (42.3%)
Home Health Aides (37.2%)
Postal Mail Clerks (35.8%)
Correctional Officier (34.2)
Barbers (31.1)
The occupations are respectable, but in terms of wealth accumulation, all five occupations' average starting salary is $28,974.20.
Blacks are underrepresented in emerging professions, such as high-skilled healthcare roles. Occupations such as Radiation Therapists and Medical transcriptionists are high paying jobs with upper-middle-class salaries, while home health aides and vocational nurses are either below the threshold for lower-middle-class earners or barely making the cut.
One of the fastest-growing sectors over the next five years and part of the emerging professions is the sales and digital marketing cluster. Some of the jobs are:
Customer Success Specialist
Business Development Representatives
Enterprise Account Executive
Digital Marketing Managers
Sales Managers
Blacks are underrepresented in these roles, with 6% being the highest representation. Generation Z will need to master these skills and a plethora of other skills like cybersecurity, Artificial Intelligence, and Cloud Computing to thrive.
